2.1 How to Use This Publication

Throughout their history, “Cornell Guidelines” (formerly “Recommendations”) have provided technical greenhouse production information based on research findings and proven industry experience.

Change is a constant companion of the greenhouse manager. New technology, competition, and changes in the regulatory environment have stimulated an emphasis on environmental stewardship, employee and public safety, and more efficient uses of operational resources. These opportunities are components of a crop production management program known as integrated management.

This publication emphasizes an integrated approach to the management of arthropods, diseases, weeds, and other pests as well as an integrated approach to crop growth regulation. Both pest management and growth management currently involve the use of agricultural chemicals. The intent of this publication is to emphasize responsible use of agricultural chemicals as well as alternatives to chemical control.

As outlined in the table of contents, this publication emphasizes the integrated management of greenhouse crop pests and greenhouse crop growth. The following chapters of this publication highlight management alternatives, especially techniques other than chemical application.

To assist in the appropriate choice of chemicals to supplement these techniques, details related to pesticide and growth regulator registration are provided in the tables.
