Pythium Damping Off, Root and Stem Rot

Avoid using a mix with poor drainage (and consequent low air pore space). Avoid excessively high levels of soluble salts in the growing mix. Use a bench surface that does not allow puddling at the base of the pots. Handle and store mix carefully to avoid contamination with unpasteurized soil. The following fungicides are labeled in New York for the control of this disease on the plants specified:

cyazofamid

Comments: For use on container-, bed-, and bench-grown ornamental plants as a soil drench or incorporated in soil media. Use is not limited to plants mentioned on the label. Pothos and English ivy are extremely sensitive to mefenoxam: see label for precautions. Some Pythium isolates are insensitive to mefenoxam; in the majority of cases, however, the material is highly effective.

mefenoxam

Subdue MAXX 21.3% MEC

Comments: For use on ornamentals, including bedding plants and flowers. Label cautions growers to conduct tests for safety to plants not mentioned on the label before widespread use. Use Subdue MAXX through irrigation, as a drench, or as a soil surface spray, or incorporate into mix. Note that rates are lower than for Subdue 2E. Rates for Subdue MAXX start as low as 0.13 fl. oz./100 gal. for drench at seeding. Some Pythium isolates are insensitive to mefenoxam; in the majority of cases, however, the material is highly effective.
