4.15 First Aid Kit for On-the-job Use

A well-equipped first aid kit is helpful in a pesticide emergency. The lid should fit tightly to prevent pesticides from penetrating inside. A legible, waterproof label makes the kit easy to identify. The following items should be included:

1.     A small bottle of detergent to wash pesticides off the skin.

2.     Containers of the most likely agents a physician would recommend for the following procedures:

·         to induce vomiting

·         to aid a person in shock

·         to neutralize acidic chemicals

·         to neutralize alkaline chemicals

·         to absorb pesticides

3.     A manufacturer-sealed plastic bottle (at least 1 pint) of pure water.

4.     An empty plastic jar with a tight-fitting lid to serve as a drinking glass or to collect vomitus if the physician recommends it.

5.     A shaped plastic airway for mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

6.     Bandages and tape to protect cuts and scrapes from exposure to pesticides.

7.     A blanket sealed in plastic to protect it from exposure to pesticides.

A list of emergency phone numbers and a cell phone, a list of nearby telephones, or coins to operate a pay phone.
